Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church

Category: Religious Organizations

Had the chance to attend and event at this church as part of a Presbyterian thang and I can safely say that if i moved to the area, this would be high on my list.

This church seems to know who it is theologically, politically and socially.  The pastors, staff and leadership seem rock solid, progressive and thoughtful.

Give them a visit if you are in the area and looking for a church.

DISCLAIMER:
Yes, I give every church FIVE STARS not because every church is superfantablous, but every church that I will review can certainly be a FIVER to someone.   I will never review a church that I would not be willing to try myself if I were looking.   No need to bad mouth freaky-scary churches because they are uh, well, freaky and scary.

Cafe Mozart

Categories: German, Ethnic Food, Delis

Located right across the street from historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, Mozarts was a great DC experience.

This German store/bar/restaurant is pretty cool, the best part of which being that there was also LIVE - yes LIVE - accordion music in the background.  Never has the sound of music sounded so good.

Rarely do I go into an eating establishment and have no freaking clue what is on the menu.   I settled on the crab cakes and they were yummy.  Pretty sure every other dish included sausage in some form and my friends say the beer was good.

If you are in and around the area, it is definitely worth a stop!

Java Brewing Company

Categories: Breweries, Restaurants

i have always loved the coffee cafe and wine bar concept.  Java Brewing Company does a pretty good job of pulling it off here in good ole' Louisville.  I could see hanging out here with its free wifi, plenty of seating and late night hours.

Java has a pretty good indie vibe, friendly staff and Thursday PM is 1/2 price wine night. Woohoo!

A fiver it is!  Good job Java!

Salonica Restaurant

I am giving this Hyde Park local Greek dive a fiver because you just CANNOT find a better atmosphere.  Greasy, good, local with a little edge to the servers.  There was NO way i pissing of my server, probably the matriarch of the crew.  I had the Mousaka, which was great . . . not that I have anything to compare it to, but just sitting there, i felt all Chicago-esque . . . not that i know that that feels like.

Prices were good, food was good, crowd was local.  A five it is!

Third World Cafe

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Hyde Park

I really wish I could give it more like 3.5 stars.  Walking by one Starbucks in the area, I asked a local where the closest indie cafe was.

She directed me to Third World Cafe.  Cool

When I can in from the rain, I first noticed that there were a good number of people.  But, the lay-out is REALLY bad.  They could arrange tables, chairs, etc, to make it much more friendly to computer users.  It seems like they want people to hang out, but it sure ain't built for it.  Few outlets and sparse tables has many a back-aches in here from trying to get settled.  The decor and design seems disjointed and without a theme, almost like it is not quite finished.  Also, my iced-coffee was served in one of those plastic cafeteria cups.  Not kitschy nor cool.

Still . . . the vibe is cool, wi-fi with purchase of $4 and it's the only thing around here apparently.  They should hope it stays that way.

Zazang Korean Noodle

Neighborhoods: Pacific Heights, Western Addition/NOPA

Went here with some friends from church on a cool Sunday afternoon.  Korean Soaps in the back ground, good friends and a big A portions.  REALLY wanted to love it, but twas not to be.  Still, my friends who are Korean like it and there were other K's there, so it must not be too bad.  Maybe next time I'll just try something new.

Westminster Retreat Center

Wow, right close we have this great retreat center and i never knew!  I had just one meeting there with a group from my work and was so impressed.  Felt very woodsy, good food and wi-fi if you need it.

Check out the website as there is plenty more info about the space, sleeping accommodations, etc.  i will definately suggest using it for retreats in the future.

First pineapple on pizza and now pears on my pannini.

The world is going C-R-A-Z-Y!!!!!

Damn . . . I liked it.

Curses you Italian good food makers!

The best part was sitting outside on a sunny Friday afternoon just watching people/students/slackers scurry down the sidewalk like little ants, while my lazy butt was thinking, "Yeah, I am a pastor . . . and this is part of my job!"

Life is good my friends, life is good.

Mission Creek Cafe

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Mission

Ritual too  . . .
hipster livin'
Chrome bag havin'
MacBook typin'

Muddy's too . . .
junkie livin'
urine smellin'
dirty bein'

Then Mission Creek might be for you.  What Mission Creek Cafe lacks in the extreme nature of some other cafes, they make it up in the being a solid all-around place to hang out and get some work done.

1 = Outlets freaking EVERYWHERE
1 = Free WiFi from ZRnet
1 = Level tables and lots of room
1 = Jazz in the background

The only reason it doesn't get a FIVER is because it does not have as much character than the aforementioned Ritual and Muddy's.  Either skank it up or gentrify already ;-)

Parkville Presbyterian Church

Category: Churches

Coming to other parts of the country I am always amazed at how many BIG church buildings there are.  As I drove through Parkville, there was this big building across from the college and low and behold, Parkville Presbyterian Church where Brian, my friend, is the pastor.

Brian has been there from almost 10 years and from "the word on the street' has helped Parkville Presbyterian become a really healthy and vibrant community of faith!  If you want  a larger church, with a solid theological perspective, put it on the list.
